7 Office Practical Jokes and Prank Ideas

Office practical jokes. A well placed office gag can really relieve some major stress at work, at the expense of your co-workers. There are 7 prank ideas here for you to try on someone in particular (if he or she has been annoying you - or just for the heck of it). Some are to be used on the unsuspecting general office population. If you're going to try them, there's the old saying among pranksters - don't get caught unless you want to. Ok, fine, I made that up.

1. Monitor Settings

For the next 1 or 2 weeks, "brighten" your favorite co-worker's day by adjusting his or her computer monitor brightness down by 2% of the original brightness - once per day. Eventually your victim will notice, but the fun won't end there if your identity as the anonymous prankster is not discovered.

Prolong this office practical joke by messing with the color settings instead. Gradually drain a color over time. I'm sure you get the idea.

2. Refusal Rebuttal Letter

You've been to an interview for a job that you really wanted, and you thought you did well. That is, until you got the dreaded rejection letter that's a tad bit too generic to tell you why you didn't get the job. Or you were just told flatly you didn't get the job.

Instead of letting the rejection eat you up, get even and gain control of the situation. Write a rejection of the rejection letter (or verbal rejection) to your "ex-potential-employer".

Dear (Interviewer's Name).

Thanks for your letter of (date). After careful consideration I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me employment with your company. This year I have been receiving a vast amount of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of candidates it is impossible for me to accept all the refusals. Despite your company's outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet with my needs at this time. Therefore, I will initiate employment with your business immediately following graduation. I am looking forward to see you then. Best of luck with your future candidate rejections.

Sincerely, (your name here)

Playing this prank idea is a win all around. At least you'll feel some sense of control that might help you let go and move on to the next interview. Your bravery might even get you the job in the end. Who knows?

3. Telephone Cord Switch

This is a really simple office practical joke. Just swap the phone lines of your target co-workers. Of course, this prank works only on traditional copper phone lines, not one of those newfangled IP phones.

I'm sure you'll just love the expression on your co-workers faces when they pick up the phone.

4. Leaning Bucket

Simply lean a bucket full of water against a door that opens inwards to someone's private office and what will you get? A great and simple office practical joke! Of course, your prank idea is in danger of being removed by co-workers who need to go in to see your intended victim, so plan to place it when that is least likely to happen.

If you want the "splash" to be more prolonged and dramatic, use marbles instead of water. Hmmm... why not water AND marbles?

5. Nameplate Swap

If you don't know everyone in your workplace after working there for years, then your workplace is probably big enough for this office practical joke to work. Simply swap the office door or cubicle nameplates with the ones down the hall or on another floor. Most people, except narcissists, won't notice until they need to find someone that they haven't met yet.

You can do it gradually over several lunchtimes, or do it after office hours. Generally execute this prank idea whenever it fits your schedule and whenever you think you're safe. Don't swap too many, or people will start to catch on!

6. Vinegar In Your Water

Ever heard the rule of not leaving your drinks unattended? That rule happens to apply to the office as well. Fortunately for you, your potential victim probably leaves his or her cup/bottle unattended whenever it's bathroom/toilet/restroom time. When your victim leaves his/her drink unattended, slip a few ounces (or milliliters) of white vinegar into it.

The drink will definitely give your target a sudden burst of energy. Not the coffee kind of burst, though.

7. Employee Of The Month

Does management nominate the employee of the month, every month (duh)? Does it come with a customary employee photo pasted on the wall? If you answered yes to both, well, it's your lucky day - to play an office practical joke, that is.

You probably guessed it by now. Monkey face here is going to be the employee of the month. Prepare a picture cutout of Mr.Monkey and paste it over the top employee's photo. Paste it discreetly, or your dreams of office prank greatness will come to a premature end.
